Wathen

On the Wathen project, we were tasked with leveling out this backyard to create a welcoming place for the homeowner’s grandkids to play, and then redesigning the plants and landscape to create a beautiful new outdoor space for the whole family to enjoy.

The first thing we did was build a steel box that went under the lawn, to re-level yard. Then we incorporated a leuder stone patio to connect the house to the lawn.

The family was inspired by a Charlottesville feel but didn’t want to lose the Texas style at the same time. To marry these two styles we used dwarf palmettos, and the soft feel of the giant leopard plants, and lambs ear. Then we used boxwoods for structure, using small boxwoods to create borders and large rounded boxwoods to create anchors and definition.

We incorporated a little more steel work than you might find in North Carolina and added some cool native Austin plants like the horse tail reed. Lastly, we wanted to break up some of the brick and just create a lushness that surrounded the yard, so we planted miniature palmetto and nelly stevens lollipop hollys just for an extra lushness. We also added loquats.

We really love how the final product turned out. This is a beautiful and lush backyard with plenty of space for kids to play and the whole family to enjoy.
